Choosing an equestrian centre in the Southern Highlands: a visitor’s checklist

The right equestrian centre should support the riding you want to do and the arrangements you need. For a beginner, that may mean patient instruction and help organising a suitable horse. For a horse owner, it may mean reliable daily care and access to particular riding facilities.
When comparing properties in Robertson, the Southern Highlands or elsewhere in NSW, use an arranged visit to ask practical questions and see how the place operates.
Be clear about what you’re looking for
Start by identifying your main purpose:
- Learning to ride.
- Returning to riding after a break.
- Improving a particular skill or discipline.
- Finding agistment for your horse.
- Accessing facilities for schooling.
A property may suit some of these needs without offering all of them. Explain your priorities before booking a visit so the team can tell you whether it is likely to be a good fit.
Look beyond the photographs
Photographs help you understand the setting, but a visit gives you a clearer sense of the facilities and how they are used.
Look at the riding surfaces, fencing, gates, paddock shelter and areas for preparing horses. Ask how maintenance is handled and what happens when weather or ground conditions affect access.
If a facility is particularly important to you, confirm that it is currently available and included in your proposed arrangement.
Ask about coaching and horse arrangements
Discuss the instructor’s qualifications, experience and approach to riders at your level. Ask how lessons are tailored and how you will agree on what to work towards.
If you need a horse, establish who provides it, how suitability is assessed and what equipment or additional charges are involved.
At Ridgeview, lessons are booked directly with Sandy Lucas. Riders may bring their own horse or arrange one with Sandy. Ridgeview does not supply horses.
Understand how a visit works
Before attending, confirm where to arrive, where to park and who will meet you. Ask about any requirements for bringing your own horse.
If you would like to observe a lesson or speak with an existing agister, ask the team to arrange that. This allows visits to fit around lessons, horse care and other people’s privacy.
Confirm the practical details
A useful conversation should leave you clear about:

For lessons held at Ridgeview, Sandy’s instruction fee is paid directly to her. The separate $25 facility fee per rider, per lesson visit is paid through the Ridgeview website.
If heavy rain affects your lesson at Ridgeview, access to Wallaby Hill Farm’s indoor arena can be arranged, subject to availability. A separate arena charge may apply, but Ridgeview’s $25 facility fee is not payable for a lesson held at Wallaby Hill’s indoor arena. You won’t pay both facility fees. Confirm arrangements with Sandy before travelling.
